Witold Pilecki

Witold Pilecki, a Polish army captain who voluntarily went to Auschwitz to set up resistance cells, has been hailed as a hero for providing first hand reports of the atrocities committed in the Nazi death camp. His detailed 1945 report on his undercover mission and daring escape was a major evidence in the Nuremberg trials. Pilecki was executed by the communist authorities in 1948, but his legacy lives on as a symbol of resistance and courage.
