Death & Legacy
Barnett Newman, the abstract expressionist artist, died on July 4 in New York aged 65. He was a late starter - his first exhibition was in 1948 when he was 44 - but his distinctive, large canvases, most of them abstracts, quickly earned him a reputation as one of the most innovative artists of his generation. His work was characterised by what he called "zips" - vertical lines or bands of colour on otherwise monochrome canvases.
