Steve Biko

Steve Biko, the black leader who was the inspiration and guiding force of the militant black consciousness movement in South Africa, died yesterday in detention in Pretoria, the South African Government announced. He was 30 years old. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed. Mr. Biko was the fourth person known to have died in police detention in the last 18 months, and the 20th since 1963.
