Last Words
"Such a fine, sunny day, and I have to go... What does my death matter, if through us, thousands of people are awakened and stirred to action?"
Death & Legacy
Albert Battel, a German army lieutenant and lawyer recognized for his resistance to the Nazi regime, died in 1952. Despite being a member of the Nazi party, Battel displayed a remarkable act of defiance in July 1942 when he blocked an SS detachment from entering the Przemysl ghetto in Poland, where they planned to round up the Jewish inhabitants for transportation to the Belzec extermination camp. His actions, which saved hundreds of Jewish lives, were recognized posthumously by Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs' and Heroes' Remembrance Authority in Jerusalem, which in 1981 designated him as a Righteous Among the Nations.
