Death & Legacy
Sister Lucia, the last of three children who claimed to have seen the Virgin Mary in a series of 1917 apparitions in Fatima, Portugal, died on Sunday at the Carmelite convent in Coimbra, where she had lived since the 1940's. She was 97. The cause was not disclosed. The children's visions, in the midst of World War I, were declared worthy of belief by the Roman Catholic Church in 1930 and have been an important part of Catholic piety ever since.
