Sadako Sasaki, who was 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, her hometown, and who 10 years later became a symbol of the human toll of nuclear warfare when she died of leukemia, passed away on Jan. 15, 1955. Her legacy lives on in the form of a statue in Hiroshima Peace Park and the thousands of origami cranes made in her memory.
