Robert Johnson, a jazz pianist, composer and arranger who was one of the architects of the modern jazz style known as bebop, died on Wednesday at his home in Manhattan. He was 80 years old. Mr. Johnson was a central figure in the development of bebop in the 1940's, working with such musicians as Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. He was known for his harmonic sophistication and his ability to create complex, intricate lines at high speed.
