Padre Pio

The Rev Dr Robert McAfee Brown, who has died aged 81, was one of the most prominent American theologians, whose activism stretched from the civil rights struggles of the 1960s to the anti-Vietnam war movement, and on to the Central American solidarity campaigns of the 1980s. A Presbyterian professor of religion at Stanford University, he was a prolific author and populariser of complex theological issues, and a committed advocate of ecumenism and social justice.
