Death & Legacy
Napoleon Bonaparte, who has died aged 51, was a military and political leader of France who significantly influenced European history. He led several successful campaigns during the French Revolutionary Wars and was the de facto leader of the French government in 1799. He declared himself the emperor in 1804 and led France against a series of coalitions in the Napoleonic Wars. He was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815 and spent the last six years of his life in confinement by the British on the island of Saint Helena.
