Mother Teresa, the tiny, stooped nun who cared for the poorest of the poor in the slums of India and beyond, died on Friday, September 5, 1997. She was 87. Her death was announced by her order, the Missionaries of Charity. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 for her humanitarian work, and in the years before her death she had been a revered figure around the world.
