Marlon Brando, generally considered the greatest actor of his generation, died on Thursday in Los Angeles, his lawyer said yesterday. He was 80. Mr. Brando, whose unpredictable behavior made him equally fascinating off the screen, was a confluence of paradoxes: an intensely private man who was one of the most famous people in the world, a street-tough from Omaha who became the embodiment of New York sophistication, a serious actor who often seemed to be throwing his career away on junk.
