John Waynes

John Wayne, the actor who came to symbolize the American cowboy and frontier marshal, died yesterday at the age of 72 at the UCLA Medical Center, where he had been undergoing treatment for cancer. Mr. Wayne, whose real name was Marion Michael Morrison, had been in failing health for several years. He had been suffering from stomach cancer since 1964, and in 1978, he underwent open-heart surgery. Despite his illnesses, he continued to make movies and public appearances almost until his death.
