Death & Legacy
The Rev. Jim Jones, the founder of the People's Temple who led more than 400 of his followers to commit suicide in the jungle of Guyana, died Sunday in the cult's agricultural commune near Port Kaituma, Guyana, apparently of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 47 years old. The charismatic churchman, who preached a blend of socialism and Christianity, was found dead with a bullet wound in his head. His death came as nearly all his followers were dying or dead from cyanide poisoning, in a mass suicide pact apparently ordered by Mr. Jones.
