James Earl Ray, the career criminal who confessed to assassinating the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and then recanted, saying he had been framed, died yesterday at a hospital in Nashville. He was 70. Mr. Ray was serving a 99-year sentence for the murder of Dr. King, the civil rights leader who was shot to death on the balcony of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis on April 4, 1968.
