Ian Curtis

The jazz saxophonist Michael Brecker, who has died of leukaemia aged 57, was one of the most fluent and forceful hard-bop soloists of his generation. He was also a prolific session musician, appearing on more than 900 albums over a four-decade career, ranging from pop and rock to jazz and blues. His powerful, slightly harsh tone and his fast, rippling runs influenced a generation of saxophonists.
