John Fowles, one of the most innovative voices in the second half of 20th-century British fiction, has died at his home in Lyme Regis, Dorset, aged 79. He had been in declining health for some time. His novels, including The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Magus and The Collector, have left an indelible mark on the literary landscape.
