Ulysses S. Kay, a composer who was one of the first African Americans to gain recognition in the world of classical music, has died at the age of 78. Kay, who composed five operas, several orchestral works, a number of chamber pieces and more than 100 songs, died of Parkinson's disease Tuesday at his home in Englewood, N.J.
