Death & Legacy
Eugen Weidmann, a German national, was the last person to be publicly executed in France. Convicted of multiple kidnappings and murders, including that of a young American socialite, Weidmann was beheaded by guillotine in June 1939. His execution reportedly drew such a rowdy crowd of spectators that French officials thereafter banned all future public executions. The "hysterical behavior" by spectators was so scandalous that it was never repeated.
