"Standing as I do in view of God and eternity, I realize that patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone."
Death & Legacy
Edith Cavell, a British nurse during the First World War, was shot by a German firing squad for helping more than 200 allied soldiers escape from occupied Belgium. Her execution in 1915 led to international condemnation of Germany’s actions, and she became a symbol of German barbarity for the remainder of the war. Her death was instrumental in changing public opinion in neutral countries and led to a rise in enlistment in Britain.
