Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, the pre-eminent postwar interpreter of lieder, has died at his home in Bavaria. The German baritone, who was regarded as one of the greatest singers of the 20th century, was 86. His huge repertoire, embracing 3,000 songs, included works by Schubert, Richard Strauss, Hugo Wolf, Brahms, Mahler and Schumann. He was also a distinguished performer of opera, and a conductor.
