Charles Darwin

The evolutionary biologist, John Maynard Smith, who has died aged 84, was one of the most influential figures in his field, and made a huge contribution to the study of animal behaviour, evolution and development. His work on game theory and the evolution of sex and ageing has been fundamental to our current understanding of how natural selection shapes the lives of all organisms.
