Edward J. Smith, in full Edward John Smith, (born January 27, 1850, Hanley [now in Stoke-on-Trent], Staffordshire, England—died April 15, 1912, at sea, northern Atlantic Ocean), British captain of the passenger liner Titanic, which sank in 1912. Smith was the captain of the Titanic on its maiden (first) voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City, U.S., which ended in disaster when the ship struck an iceberg and sank. More than 1,500 of the approximately 2,200 passengers and crew aboard died, including Smith, who went down with his ship.
