Death & Legacy
Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo along with his wife Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, on 28 June 1914. The assassination was carried out by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb Yugoslav nationalist, and led to the outbreak of World War I.
