Andy Kaufman

Andy Kaufman, the comedian who baffled and often angered audiences with his peculiar brand of humor, died yesterday of lung cancer at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 35 years old. Mr. Kaufman, who was best known for his role as the lovable mechanic Latka Gravas on the television series ''Taxi,'' was a master of the put-on, the comic hoax. His performances often left audiences wondering whether they were in on the joke or the butt of it.
